3 Great Books for Personal Growth

Updated: Aug 16, 2020

I love reading fiction. It's my favourite way of escapism. But for a while now, I've been reading a lot of Non-fiction and by Non-Fiction I mean self help books.

If you need an escape from reality, I think Fiction will serve the purpose, But when it comes to facing Reality and fighting Back, Self help Books can come in quite handy.

Self help books or personal development books are trending a lot these days, as it rightly should be.

Whether you're battling with low self esteem or depression or even stuck in a rut, and you want to understand yourself better, these books will serve as your personal assistant.

A lot of people from my bookstagram account have been asking for book recommendations related to self help and so I decided to do a post exclusively for this.

You might find a in-depth review of some of these books in my other blog posts.

The following are the books which I personally loved and many others have in the Bookish community.

1. THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A F*CK - MARK MANSON

Do I even have to tell anything about this book? It's self introductory I guess.

This book by Mark Manson has taken the self-help department by storm, Most people swear by this book and even call it "the best self-help book ever".

It has a rating of 4/5 & 4.3/5 in Goodreads and Amazon respectively.

Though the language used can be quite rude and so is the Title (You'll have to make your own peace with that), But his advice is quite funny, blunt and very realistic.

The following are some of my favourite quotes from the book:

1.“The truth is I thought I wanted something but it turns out I didn’t. End of story.”

2.“If suffering is inevitable if our problems in life are unavoidable, then the question we should be asking is not ‘How do I stop suffering? but ‘Why am I suffering–for what purpose?'”

3. “Action isn’t just the effect of motivation, it’s the cause of it.”

4. “It’s not about giving a f*ck about everything your partner gives a f*ck about; it’s about giving a f*ck about your partner regardless of the f*cks or she gives. That’s unconditional love, baby.”

5. “The true measurement of self-worth is not how a person feels about her positive experiences, but rather how she feels about her negative experiences.”

The author just released his second book titled " Everything is f*cked", a book about Hope.

In this book, Mark Manson quotes: Hope for the infinite opportunity and oppression present in every single moment. Hope for the suffering that comes with freedom. For the pain that comes from happiness. For the wisdom that comes from ignorance. For the power that comes from surrender. And then act despite it. This is our challenge, our calling: To act without hope. To not hope for better. To be better. In this moment and the next. And the next. Everything is fucked. And hope is both the cause and the effect of that fuckedness.

I highly recommend reading the entire book for a better understanding.

2. GIRL WASH YOUR FACE - RACHEL HOLLIS

I read this book about a month ago, this book has mixed reviews because of the author's emphasis on God and religion. Personally I loved this book and felt quite motivated after reading. It has a rating of 3.8/5 and 4.7/5 in Goodreads and Barnes & Noble respectively.

Girl wash your face is a New York Times bestselling 2018 self-help book by Rachel Hollis.

It's an amalgamation of Motivational Tips, Bible Quotations and real-life illustrations from the life of the author. One can learn so many wonderful things from this book.

This book consists of 20 chapters and each chapter is based on all the lies we say to ourselves.

This book is for those who don't know where they're headed or stuck in Life and need a little kick in the butt.

Following are my favourite quotes from this book.

1. “Your dream is worth fighting for, and while you’re not in control of what life throws at you, you are in control of the fight.”

2. “You do not have permission to quit.”

3. “You will get through this season. This too shall pass. Don’t set the rest of your life upon a downhill slope because of one hard season.”

4. “Decide what’s really important to you. Then do those things first. If the house is cluttered or you need to wait until next year to train for a half marathon, well that’s just life.

5. “Girl, get ahold of your life. Stop medicating, stop hiding out, stop being afraid, stop giving away pieces of yourself, stop saying you can’t do it. Stop the negative self-talk, stop abusing your body, stop putting it off for tomorrow or Monday or next year. Stop crying about what happened and take control of what happens next. Get up, right now. Rise up from where you’ve been, scrub away the tears and pain of yesterday, and start again… Girl, wash your face!”

3. YOU ARE A BADASS - JEN SINCERO

I felt that "girl wash your face" was quite similar to this book in many ways. Main difference being this book emphasizes on "The law of attraction" while the latter focuses on Faith and God. I read this book early this year and totally fell in love with it. The author has got a knack of delivering her message in the most humorous way possible.

The book is broken up into chapters including narrative stories from the author's Life, followed by tips on how to transform them into action an inculcate it in your own life.

She encourages the readers by telling them to do simple things like creating a vision board and quotes different affirmations that one can say when stuck in a certain situation.

Following are my favourite quotes from this book.

1. “When you learn to consciously master the energetic realm, believe in the not yet seen, and stay in your highest frequency, you harness your innate power to create the reality you desire.”

2. “Keep your thoughts directed at your goal, do everything that you DO know how to do to make it happen, decide with an unwavering determination that it will happen, and be on the lookout for the opportunity”

3. “What other people think about you has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them”

4. “In order to change your life and start living a new one that you’ve never lived before, your faith in miracles, and yourself, must be greater than your fear. However easy or rough your birth process is, you have to be willing to fall down, get up, look stupid, cry, laugh, make a mess, clean it up and not stop until you get there. No matter what”

Jen gives the reader a separate reason to love themselves in almost every chapter of part 2 & 3 of the book, and this is my favourite part.

LOVE YOURSELF

1.Because it's the holy Grail of Happiness.

2. No matter what anyone else thinks.

3. Like you're the only you there is.

4.Unless you have a better idea :)

5. You deserve it.
